Never Too Late: The Power of Purpose at Any Age

Dear Friends,

Far too often, an older adult is only asked, “Tell me about your life/history,” without being asked, “What is it that you still want to do?” As I have said many times, I believe it is critically important for everyone to have something to aspire to and look forward to—at any age. We should continuously push the envelope of what is possible for ourselves.

Unfortunately, as we age, it is common to pull back on goal setting. This may be due to a higher frequency of physical or cognitive limitations, or societal norms that suggest aging should be about slowing down and taking it easy.

That being said, many older adults are breaking this stigma, and I believe we will continue to see more and more individuals setting and pursuing their aspirations and dreams well into their later years.

For this week’s newsletter, I’d like to highlight a local story of a dear friend of mine who is certainly defying this trend. I couldn’t be prouder of Jeff Seckendorf, who will attempt to break four sanctioned world records in a cycling challenge for his age group (70-74) this June in San Diego.

The first day I met Jeff years ago, he shared his vision of competing in this

challenge. Now, after years of training and hard work, he’s officially age-eligible and ready to race!

Jeff will be competing in four categories:

  •  Farthest distance in 6 hours
  •  Fastest 100 km
  •  Fastest 100 miles
  •  Fastest 200 km

Whether he sets a record or not, he has already achieved something remarkable. I’ve seen firsthand the dedication, long hours, and relentless drive he’s put into reaching this goal. His journey reminds me of the lyrics from The Climb by Miley Cyrus:

“Ain’t about how fast I get there,

Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side,

It’s the climb.”

Jeff isn’t just an incredible athlete—he’s also the Director of Operations at the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego, a cause that he has poured his heart into. This race isn’t just about personal achievement—it’s about giving back. Jeff has dedicated his ride to supporting the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego, a fantastic organization that I know well.

If you feel inspired to support Jeff and this important cause, please consider making a donation. Every dollar raised will go toward improving the lives of those living with Parkinson’s disease.

Jeff, you inspire us all with your perseverance, passion, and heart. Wishing you an incredible race ahead!

Let’s cheer him on and support this amazing mission.
